Community Rewards Spotlight: Look Good Feel Better – Cancer Patients Foundation
Look Good Feel Better is a national cancer-support program helping Australians manage the physical and emotional impacts of cancer treatment. Run by The Cancer Patients Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, this impactful program is completely independent, receiving no government funding and relying solely on community and corporate sponsors.
Since 1990, Look Good Feel Better has supported over 190,000 Australians, including women, men, young adults, and teens. Through free in-person and online workshops and Confidence Kits, the program helps connect a community of people living a shared experience, empowering them to regain control, confidence, and a sense of self.
Guided by volunteer experts, these non-medical workshops cover everything from skincare and cosmetics to headwear, fitness, and mental well-being. Participants are equipped with Confidence Kits, which include skincare and cosmetic products along with practical videos and written guides.
Since partnering with Canberra Southern Cross Club in 2020, Look Good Feel Better has raised over $20,000—funding that has enabled more than 200 people in the ACT to access its services. Our club is honoured to host an average of 10 workshops each year, providing further support to local cancer patients.
One local beneficiary, Dina, recently shared her experience with Look Good Feel Better after attending her first workshop shortly after beginning chemotherapy. Reflecting on her experience, she said:
“As I hadn’t lost my hair yet or started to look ill, I was worried that I didn’t “look” like a cancer patient, but I still wanted to know what the options were for wigs and head coverings, as well as how to draw on eyebrows. My worries turned out to be unfounded, because the other ladies attending were all at different stages of treatment anyway.
I’ve learned some really important things from the workshops which I wouldn’t have learned otherwise. In particular, how important it is to protect your skin from the sun, which types of cap are most comfortable (bamboo is the best!), and different ways to tie up scarves.
Learning all this useful information was great, but what has really stuck with me is the feeling of being understood and supported.
Cancer treatment is really lonely because even the most loving friends and family can’t understand what you’re going through unless they’ve been through it themselves. Talking to the other participants about their experiences and treatment was really comforting, and the volunteers running the workshop, many of whom had been through it themselves, were so understanding.”
Through our Community Rewards program, we’re proud to support Look Good Feel Better in its mission to uplift those navigating a cancer journey.
