Community Rewards Spotlight: Koala Playschool

Recently, we had the privilege of visiting Koala Playschool, a not-for-profit community organisation in Canberra dedicated to early childhood education. Specialising in play-based programs for three and four-year-olds, Koala Playschool provides a nurturing environment where children can flourish socially and emotionally before entering preschool.

What sets Koala Playschool apart is its unique approach to education. Unlike traditional long daycare centres that often cater to working parents, this school prioritises the needs of children. With fixed groups of children and consistent educators, it fosters strong, trusting relationships that are crucial for young children’s emotional development. Mel, the passionate director, shared that the organisation has been operating for over 30 years, evolving from a few hours of service each week to a full-time program today. This intimate setting encourages a strong sense of community, with parents actively involved through a roster system, enriching the experience for both children and families.

A key factor enabling Koala Playschool to provide its invaluable services is the Community Rewards Program, supported by the Canberra Southern Cross Club. This initiative is instrumental in funding activities and resources that enhance the educational experience for the children. For instance, this year, the program helped organise engaging incursions, including visits from Peter the Reptile Man and a dynamic dance instructor who led themed shows on space and princesses. Such activities not only educate but also spark imagination and creativity among the children.

Additionally, the program supports the purchase of essential resources, such as outdoor play equipment, which is vital for physical development. Last year, Koala Playschool invested in new soccer balls and climbing structures, enriching the outdoor environment where children learn through play. The financial assistance from the Community Rewards Program significantly eases the burden on Koala Playschool, allowing them to keep fees affordable for families. As a not-for-profit, they operate on a tight budget, and without this support, many enriching activities would be financially unviable.

Koala Playschool also prides itself on its exceptional outdoor space, featuring balance beams, a sandpit, a pirate ship, and a mud kitchen. These elements foster imaginative play and exploration, promoting physical development and creativity. The outdoor classroom, “Winigay,” meaning “listen and learn” in an indigenous language, serves as a fantastic venue for storytelling and interactive learning.

Our visit to Koala Playschool highlighted the significant impact community support can have on early childhood education. The Canberra Southern Cross Club’s Community Rewards Program is important in helping Koala Playschool thrive, ensuring that all children can benefit from a rich, play-based educational experience. This partnership not only fosters happy, confident learners but also strengthens our community as a whole.
