Deanne Calisthenics Club, founded in 1975, has been at the heart of Canberra’s performing arts community for almost 50 years! Run entirely by volunteers, this non-profit club is dedicated to bringing the joy of callisthenics—a unique sport that blends dance, strength, flexibility, and teamwork—to people of all ages.

Calisthenics is a dynamic and artistic sport that combines teamwork, musical appreciation, strength, flexibility and performance. Deanne Calisthenics Club welcomes participants of all ages and skill levels—from two-year-olds just starting to the masters team, whose members are over 50. With the guidance of coaches, team members build skills in dance and performance while gaining confidence, creating friendships, and working toward their personal best.

Participants are mentored and trained to dance at local and competition level and can be chosen to represent the ACT at a national level. Each year, the club competes in three local competitions, offering all members the opportunity to showcase their hard work and talent. The season’s highlight is a trip to Ballarat, where age-group teams—from Subbies through to Seniors—compete in a celebrated final event. The year culminates in an annual concert and presentation.

All items are choreographed by talented coaches whose dedication and commitment enable the club to compete throughout the year. Each team performs routines in categories like aesthetics, club, rods, free exercise, and march, with additional “fancy” items such as folk dance, callisthenics spectacular, and revue rotated.

The Canberra Southern Cross Club is proud to support Deanne Calisthenics Club through our Community Rewards program, helping them offer enhanced participation opportunities for all members. Funds from the program contribute to covering fees for classes, competition entries, hall hire, and costume creation, making it easier for everyone to engage in the unique art of callisthenics.
