Taylor Primary School – part of a rewarding Community

Next time you drive past Taylor Primary School in Kambah look out for children nibbling on tomatoes, cutting chives and planting veggies.

If you’re a Canberra Southern Cross Club member that has nominated the school’s parents and citizens group in the club’s Community Rewards Program, your hard earned dollars are going directly to helping the students maintain their vegetable patch.

The club’s rewards program sees 10 per cent of funds members spend on food and beverages at their favourite venue go towards their nominated community group.

This financial year Taylor Primary School P&C is on track to receive a $1200 donation, with 71 club members nominating the group to receive money.

Parents and citizens vice president Samantha Hayes said the funds would be pooled with money from other fundraising ventures and go towards the garden, school excursions, the Grade 6 graduation and the bicycle program.

“The students just love the veggie patch and being able to pop down there to cut some chives or nibble on some tomatoes,” she said.

“They are able to sometimes eat what they’ve grown in class and they also do cooking with the produce.

“We really appreciate the support from the club as it makes such a difference to our ability to be able to support our children.

“Some of the things we spend money on, like the veggie patch and the bike program, make learning more fun.

“It’s so nice for children to enjoy and look forward to going to school and as a parent I feel happier and more confident when I know my children feel good about going to school.”

Mrs Hayes said the role of the P&C was to act as a support for families within the school and was an avenue to raise improvement suggestions, concerns and to have goals achieved.

“Last year we were able to assist in implementing a school lunch order system as we don’t have a canteen,” she said.

Taylor Primary School is one of 96 community groups receiving financial support through the Community Rewards Program. For more information on how you can support our local community visit the Community Rewards page.
