Community Rewards Spotlight: Pegasus Riding for the Disabled

Pegasus, Riding for the Disabled provides equestrian activities for people with disabilities in the Canberra region. Pegasus is also one of the longest running charities in the area and fifty years on, the organisation has maintained its commitment to delivering high-quality, integrity-led classes, earning recognition as a Center of Excellence. At the core of this success are the devoted Riding for the Disabled Australia qualified coaches, who design, implement, and manage over 800 lessons annually, facilitating transformative experiences for participants.

A huge part of Pegasus’s operations are the volunteers who selflessly contribute their time and effort. These volunteers assist participants, help with farm work, manage the gardens and work with the horses. Under the guidance of an experienced Horse Manager, these volunteers ensure that both the participants and the horses receive the best care and attention.

“While the delivery of our programs relies heavily on volunteers, Pegasus requires funding from the community to assist with the elements of our operations that come at a financial cost. This is where the Canberra Southern Cross Club Community Rewards Program is so valuable to Pegasus and other charities in the Canberra community,” said Jo Kennedy, Pegasus Fundraising and Event Coordinator.

Pegasus has a group of 18 horses that live under the care of a dedicated team, receiving special attention, including medical care, dental check-ups, and a balanced diet. They become the organisation’s special ‘’Pegasus Ponies’’ after rigorous training and exercise building on their natural instincts to deliver sessions. These specially trained horses play a crucial role in therapy sessions, creating meaningful interactions with people.

To ensure the success of these therapy sessions, specific equipment such as sturdy stirrups, saddles, and lead ropes are essential. These tools help create a safe and comfortable environment for both the participants and the horses. Additionally, Pegasus organises games and activities both indoors and outdoors, designed to be sensory-friendly and purposeful. To maintain the quality of these experiences, the equipment used in these games needs to be regularly updated.

All these efforts require financial support, and this is where our community steps in. Pegasus is grateful to the members of the community who have chosen to support their cause through our Community Rewards Program. We are happy to support Pegasus in continuing its important mission to provide benefits for people with disability through being around horses and horse riding. With our program’s help, Pegasus can provide a safe haven where both humans and horses thrive, fostering a positive impact on the lives of everyone involved.
