Orange Sky Australia is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness—an idea founded in a Brisbane garage by two 20-year-old friends, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett. Orange Sky Australia provides a platform for everyday Australians to connect through a regular laundry and shower service.

Their focus is on creating a safe, positive, and supportive environment for people who are often ignored or feel disconnected from the community. Their volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness, but they are empathetic listeners and excellent communicators.

Lucas Patchett, the CEO of Orange Sky, understands the challenges many Aussies face today. He acknowledges the hardships brought about by the rising cost of living and the rental crisis. Despite these challenges, Orange Sky has intensified its efforts to support the community. According to Patchett, “Orange Sky has never been busier, so it has never been a more important time for our vans and our incredible team of volunteers to be out in the community supporting the growing number of people who need help.”

Orange Sky Australia’s impact extends far beyond the laundry machines. Their success is grounded in the support they receive from the community and partners like the Canberra Southern Cross Club. Patchett emphasizes, “Orange Sky couldn’t do what we do without the support of the incredible community and partners like the Canberra Southern Cross Club. Through the Canberra Southern Cross Club’s Community Rewards Program support, Orange Sky has been able to establish and deliver our much-needed services of free laundry, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in the Canberra region.”

Since they began operating in Canberra, the service has provided more than 11,500 loads of laundry and facilitated over 21,700 hours of conversation.
