The Canberra Jazz Club (CJC) is a small not-for-profit social group which was re-established in 1970 and today enjoys an average membership of around 200. It aims to provide and promote live jazz in Canberra while also providing the opportunity for musicians to play jazz.

Since 1980, the CJC has worked closely with the Southern Cross Club to provide jazz in Canberra. However, the CJC did not have a venue for regular events until it approached the Southern Cross Club Jamison about presenting Sunday afternoon concerts there. With financial support from the Jamison Club, ‘Jazz at Jamison’ was launched in August 2011, presenting a concert every two months or so.

However, it wasn’t until funding was received under the Southern Cross Club’s Community Rewards program that a monthly concert was possible.

Linda Wiese, Secretary of the CJC said “The Community Rewards program has been essential to the growth and survival of our Club and the availability of quality, regular live jazz events in Canberra”.

With few jazz bands available in Canberra, the CJC was able to use the Program funding to invite popular interstate jazz bands to play at the Jamison Club. The regularity of monthly concerts offering a variety of music and musicians sparked renewed interest in jazz from the Canberra community, resulting in both an increase in Club memberships and an increase in audience numbers.
