Community Rewards Spotlight: 500 Card Group

Founded over a decade ago, this group of card enthusiasts has found a home within Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the 500 Card Group remained with around 40 members and is happy to welcome new joiners at any time.

Every Monday and Wednesday night, members get together to play cards—whether it’s 500, Bolivia, Solo, or a round of Hearts. But the club is about more than just cards. They also organise annual parties, trips, and hangouts at each other’s homes, building friendship.

Yet, the 500 Card Group is not just about fun and games, it’s about giving back to the community that has embraced them. Through the Community Rewards program, the club not only sustains itself but also supports other community groups and charities close to their hearts, such as bike rides for the Black Dog Association, to fundraising events for breast cancer research.

Ann, one of the club’s longstanding members, emphasises the importance of community. “It’s not just about playing cards, it’s about becoming a community.” she says. And indeed, this sense of belonging fills every aspect of the 500 Card Group’s culture.

“We try to give back. Whenever the club have events, we organise our members to come and support it, and we use the money that we get from the program to subsidise our members. We support the club, because the club supports us. It’s a symbiotic relationship.”

We are proud to support the 500 Card Group through our Community Rewards program, enabling them to continue to grow and support others. The 500 Card Group remains committed to spreading the joy of cards, fostering connections, and making a positive impact in their community.
