WODEN TO WELCOME MODERN NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTRE

The Canberra Southern Cross Club has announced a proposal to build a new health and wellness centre in the heart of Woden.

“This is an exciting time for our members, the Club and the Woden community,” said Canberra Southern Cross Club CEO, Ian Mackay.

The Club’s Board has endorsed early plans for a modern multi-storey centre on the South Eastern end of Section 79 (the old ‘Pitch and Putt’ site).

“We’re imagining everything you need to review, revive, rebalance and recharge—everything for a healthier, better lifestyle—all under one roof,” said Mr Mackay.

“This will be a first for Canberra and a unique development for the south side.”

Plans include an early learning childcare centre and a whole foods café on the ground level, with other levels housing a 24-hour gym, group exercise and training rooms and allied health professionals such as physiotherapy and remedial massage.

“Our Irving Street Health Club lease expires in two years, so it is a natural move, as part of our broader diversification program, to develop a fantastic purpose-built facility,” said Mr Mackay.

“We now have the perfect opportunity to make this a reality on part of the Club’s vacant site near Yamba Drive. Our planned health and wellness centre will help revitalise Woden, renewing and reconnecting the site to the surrounding community and town centre.

“We’re committed to providing our members and the wider community with services that promote health, wellbeing and care. It’s part of the Club’s drive to diversify revenue streams and further build our reputation as a leader in the provision of health and wellness services—to meet our members’ needs and continue our strong support for the Canberra community.”

The Club is consulting with its members, the ACT Government and the Woden community about the development.

“We are aiming to lodge a formal development application in the first quarter of 2016, and open the new centre in early 2018. The project will see over $15 million invested and up to 50 full time jobs created,” said Mr Mackay.
