| Over the last year, Southern Cross Club kitchens have got into feeding worms.
To start, Woden ran a three-month organic waste recycling trial. Just over 17 tonnes of organic waste was collected for local company Able Organics to feed their worms.
All food scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds, even serviettes and paper hand towels are collected to be sent through a recycling process using hot composting and composting worms. Worm castings are then used as fertiliser.
“By recycling our organic waste this way, the Club is saving tonnes of waste going into landfill,” Environmental Manager, Bruce Grimmond explained.
Tuggeranong adopted organic recycling in August, the Yacht Club in October and Jamison in November. Woden averages five tonnes of organic material each month.
“It really is rewarding to see the environment benefiting from such a simple change in the way we get rid of our organic waste,” Bruce said. |
