Community support

As a service organisation, an essential part of our role is contributing to our community. One of the ways we demonstrate our commitment is through the support of local events and activities that benefit the Canberra community as a whole.

Local Community

The Canberra Southern Cross Clubs Annual Community Grants supports over 90 local organisations. For more information or to apply for a grant, click here.

We are an ECO Club

As part of our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment, the Club employed an Environmental manager and joined the Clubs NSW’s ECO Clubs Program. Under the Program, we have achieved a number of initiatives:

Reduced watering of lawns and gardens at our Woden venue
The Club was granted a bore water licence and has installed water tanks to collect and use water for the maintenance of lawns and gardens. The Club has also converted the lawns to lower maintenance grass, reducing the demand for watering.

Pitch and Putt irrigation and grass conversion project
The Club converted cool climate grass for the fairways, surrounds and areas of rough at Pitch and Putt, to couch grass, resulting in a reduction in the amount of water required to maintain the course. An irrigation conversion has also taken place which utilises bore water and potable water from the pond.

Worm farm
Involvement in the Eco Club program has introduced the Club to the benefit of worm farms. Not only do they reduce waste costs, they also produce a by-product which can be used as a valuable fertiliser on the greens and gardens of all our venues.

Environmental audit

The Club has also entered into an M.O.U. with the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) to examine energy and water usage, waste generation and management at two of our venues. Following the assessment, recommendations will be made for the reduction of greenhouse gases, environmental and commercial sustainability and the improvement of operational efficiencies, making environmental performance a cornerstone of organisational policy at all Southern Cross Club venues. To meet these recommendations, the Club will continue to provide an ongoing financial commitment to projects and training for staff.
